"The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg" is a piece of short fiction by Mark Twain. It first appeared in Harper's Monthly in December 1899, and was subsequently published by Harper & Brothers in the collection The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg and Other Stories and Sketches (1900). Twain actually encouraged it to be read as a replay of the Garden of Eden story in a satiric sense. Definitely classic Twain in his prime with loads of humor like this passage from title story "All night long eighteen principle citizens did what their caste-brother Richards was doing at the same time-they put in their energies trying to remember what notable service it was that they had unconsciously done Barclay Goodson. And while they were at this work...their wives put in the night spending the money, which was easy." Beyond the humor tho, there is great insight as is in this passage "A sin takes on new and real terrors when there seems a chance that is going to be found out." Book includes several other shorts including -My First Lie
The Esquimax Maiden's Romance
Is He Living or is He Dead?
At the Appetite-Cure
My Boyhood Dreams
and other rarities that are easily reached via a link at the table of contents preceding the beginning and would set you back at least a $1 each if bought individually making this compilation a bargain! Have some fun reading the works of a master storyteller, Mark Twain.

The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg and Other Stories Annotated Mark Twain 9781521080733 Books Reviews
I am a fan of Mark Twain. This is a very nice collection of short stories that gives a small view into the authors mind.
one of twain's look at human nature and how it can be turned on money. a central theme in many of his writings on human nature. great book fantastic plot and ending
Very enjoyable. Good stories. Mark Twains stories, although they are obviously in the Twain vain never get tiresome and are usually always clever.
This book contains some short stories such as the one in the title, and also some autobiographical notes, not necessarily 'unimproved' relations, and possibly totally invented. Of interest is his advocacy of prolongued fasting as a cure for a wide range of illnesses.
Good read if you are a Twain fan. The title story is probably the best one - an amusing study of human nature.
This book told the story of a town super-proud of its honest reputation and the man who was determined to make the citizens eat their words. The book also contained many other Mark Twain short stories.
I am a fan of Mark Twain. I originally read this short novel in Junior High (over 50 years ago). I was looking for something light to read during a recent overseas trip so I decided that installing it on my Kendal device would be a good idea. Not surprisingly, I was not disappointed. If you are looking for an enjoyable read, you can't go wrong with this book or Mark Twain in general.
